You see their CIO is telling the press and Congress that they can’t find people and they only way they can continue to do business is by importing foreign workers.
Your read "Applications will not be considered without a salary history".
You arrive for the interview and can't find a parking space because of all of the reserved spots used to separate the "haves" from the "have nots".
Your first stop is Human Resources.
You are asked to fill out a job application.
Human Resources makes you wait 45 minutes.
The person you were supposed to interview isn't there and the company never calls or writes to apologize.
The Human Resources person asks how someone with your qualifications dares to take up their time.
You are given a 3 hour programming test.
It takes you 5 minutes to complete the 3 hour programming test.
The bathrooms are dirty.
Programmers sit in cubicles but managers work in enclosed offices, denying themselves the "communication benefits" of cubicles.
You can tell the relative position of everyone in the company by the size of their cubicle and office furniture.
The hiring manager tells you that if the project gets behind schedule he may tell everyone to come in at 7 and stay until 6.
Programmers PCs have no CD-ROM readers to prevent them from loading software.
You see copies of "Peopleware" sitting on programmers' bookshelves, but not on the managers'.
You hear the division VP yelling "F*&^ You" from his corner office.
For the project you are being considered, the hardware and software has already been selected but the system requirements document has not been written.
You see multiple people forced to work together in a wide open room.
Your learn that a DBA group, separate from the project team, handles all the database work.
There is a cafeteria in the building, but no one other than the consultants eats there.
All the senior managers have tans and executive hair.
The only African-Americans in the building sweep the floors.
You are told "Our strategy is X", where X is one or more products whose sales reps are getting a big bonus this year.
The personnel rep deliberately schedules you to come in for a second interview on a day when no one will be there to punish you for not being able to come on their first choice day.
They make you take a drug test.
